During the COVID-19 isolation period it is important to stock up on pantry and freezer food items to last in your household. However, this is not a call-to-action to stock up on confectionary and fried snacks. In fact, now more than ever is a great time to fill your cupboards and freezers with healthier foods and try out some new recipes. As mentioned in our first blog, it is important to consume macro and micro nutrients from all food groups to maintain health, keep our immune systems healthy, and continue to manage or prevent chronic disease.
To find healthier packaged foods, consider a credit and debit system. With each product we put in our basket, we want to have more of the credits (the better-for-you nutrients) and less of the debits (the not-so-good for us nutrients).
Credits:
More fibre
More protein
Debits:
Less Salt
Less Sugar
Less Saturated Fat
The following UK and Canadian shopping pages summarize products from a variety of food groups that consider the credit and debit nutrients. In addition, each group of product recommendations has recipes to inspire you to try something new in the kitchen.
